Congratulations! Reading this subject matter means you’re likely to be contemplating your career, and if you’re considering retraining you’ve even now progressed more than the majority of people will. Are you aware that hardly any of us consider ourselves contented at work - yet the vast majority of us will take no corrective action. We implore you to be different and take action - don’t you think you deserve it.

We recommend you seek advice first - find someone who knows the industry; an advisor who can discover your ideal job, and then show you the courses you may be suited to:

* Is working with other people your thing? Are you better with new people or those you know well? Maybe you like to deal with tasks that you deal with by yourself?

* What elements are you looking for from the industry your job is in? (Things do change - look at the building trade, or banks for example.)

* How long a career do you hope to have once retrained, and will the market sector give you the confidence that will happen?

* Would it be useful for the course you’re re-training in to be in an area where you believe your chances of gainful employment are high up to retirement age?

It’s important that you don’t overlook the IT industry - everyone knows that it’s getting bigger. It’s not all nerdy people looking at computer screens all day - it’s true some IT jobs demand that, but most jobs are carried out by people like you and me who are earning rather well.

Starting with the idea that it’s good to home-in on the market that sounds most inviting first and foremost, before we’re even able to contemplate which method of training ticks the right boxes, how can we choose the way that suits us?

Scanning lists of IT career possibilities is no use whatsoever. The majority of us don’t really appreciate what our next-door neighbours do at work each day - so we have no hope of understanding the subtleties of a specific IT job.

Getting to a well-informed resolution really only appears through a systematic analysis covering many different key points:

* Your personality can play an important part - what gets you ‘up and running’, and what are the activities that really turn you off.

* Are you hoping to get certified because of a particular motive - for example, do you aim to work at home (self-employment possibly?)?

* Is the money you make further up on your list of priorities than other factors.

* Often, trainees don’t consider the amount of work required to get fully certified.

* How much time you’re prepared to spend on the training program.

Ultimately, the best way of checking this all out is via a meeting with a professional that knows the industry well enough to give you the information required.

Have a conversation with any specialised advisor and we’d be amazed if they couldn’t provide you with many awful tales of how students have been duped by salespeople. Only deal with an industry professional that asks some in-depth questions to find out what’s appropriate to you - not for their paycheque! Dig until you find the very best place to start for you.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got any qualifications that are related, then you will often be able to pick-up at a different starting-point to someone who is new to the field.

Commencing with a basic PC skills program first can be the best way to get into your computer studies, depending on your skill level at the moment.

An important area that is sometimes not even considered by trainees considering a training program is ‘training segmentation’. Essentially, this is the method used to break up the program for drop-shipping to you, which vastly changes what you end up with.

Normally, you will join a program that takes between and 1 and 3 years and get posted one section at a time - from one exam to the next. This sounds logical on one level, until you consider this:

What would happen if you didn’t finish each element within the time limits imposed? Often the prescribed exam order won’t be as easy as some other structure would for you.

Truth be told, the best solution is to obtain their recommendation on the best possible order of study, but to receive all the materials up-front. You’re then in possession of everything should you not complete it at their required pace.

Finding your first job in the industry can be a little easier if you’re offered a Job Placement Assistance facility. With the massive demand for appropriately skilled people in the UK right now, it’s not too important to make too much of this option though. It isn’t so complicated as you might think to find the right work once you’re trained and certified.

You would ideally have help with your CV and interview techniques though; additionally, we would recommend any student to update their CV as soon as they start a course - don’t delay until you’ve qualified.

You’ll often find that you will get your first job whilst still on the course (even in the early stages). If your course details aren’t on your CV (and it hasn’t been posted on jobsites) then you won’t even be considered!

The most efficient companies to help get you placed are usually local IT focused employment agencies. As they’re keen to place you to receive their commission, they’re perhaps more focused on results.

In a nutshell, if you put as much hard work into landing your first job as into studying, you’re not likely to experience problems. A number of people bizarrely conscientiously work through their learning program and then call a halt once qualified and seem to suppose that interviewers know they’re there.

For those interested in joining a web design team, studying Adobe Dreamweaver is vital for attaining relevant certifications acknowledged around the world.

by Jason Kendall

For those interested in joining a web design team, studying Adobe Dreamweaver is vital for attaining relevant certifications acknowledged around the world.

We’d also suggest that you learn all about the complete Adobe Web Creative Suite, including Flash and Action Script, in order to use Dreamweaver as a commercial web-designer. This knowledge can mean later becoming an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) or Adobe Certified Professional (ACP).

Designing the website is only the beginning of the learning required by professional web-designers today. You’d be wise to look for a program with a range of specialist features, for example E-Commerce, SEO (Search Engine Optimisation,) to enable you to appreciate the way to drive traffic, maintain content and program dynamic sites that are database driven.

Don’t put too much store, as a lot of students can, on the training course itself. You’re not training for the sake of training; you should be geared towards the actual job at the end of it. You need to remain focused on where you want to go.

You could be training for only a year and end up doing the actual job for 10-20 years. Don’t make the error of taking what may be a very ‘interesting’ program only to waste your life away with something you don’t even enjoy!

You also need to know what your attitude is towards earning potential, career development, and if you’re ambitious or not. You need to know what industry expects from you, what particular exams they want you to have and how you’ll gain real-world experience.

Sense dictates that you seek advice from an industry professional before embarking on a particular learning program, so you can be sure that the chosen route will give you the skills for the job being sought.

We’d hazard a guess that you’re a practical sort of person - the ‘hands-on’ individual. If you’re like us, the trial of reading reference books and manuals is something you’ll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but it’s not really your thing. Check out video-based multimedia instruction if book-based learning really isn’t your style.

Our ability to remember is increased when multiple senses are involved - learning experts have been saying this for years now.

Locate a program where you’ll receive a library of CD or DVD ROM’s - you’ll be learning from instructor videos and demo’s, and then have the opportunity to practice your skills in interactive lab’s.

It’s imperative to see examples of the study materials provided by the company you’re considering. They have to utilise video, demonstrations and various interactive elements.

Some companies only have access to just online versions of their training packages; and while this is acceptable much of the time, imagine the problems if internet access is lost or you only get very a very slow connection sometimes. It is usually safer to have physical CD or DVD discs which removes the issue entirely.

It’s essential to have accredited simulation materials and an exam preparation system as part of your training package.

Avoid relying on unauthorised exam preparation systems. Their phraseology is often somewhat different - and this leads to huge confusion when the proper exam time arrives.

Clearly, it is really important to make sure you’re completely ready for your final certified exam before taking it. Going over ‘mock’ tests helps build your confidence and helps to avoid wasted exam attempts.

When did you last consider your job security? For the majority of us, this issue only becomes a talking point when something goes wrong. However, the reality is that true job security simply doesn’t exist anymore, for all but the most lucky of us.

Wherever we find increasing skills shortages mixed with growing demand however, we generally discover a newly emerging type of security in the marketplace; driven forward by a continual growth, organisations struggle to find the influx of staff needed.

The computer industry skills deficit throughout the UK is standing at just over twenty six percent, as reported by a recent e-Skills survey. Essentially, we only have the national capacity to fill 3 out of every 4 jobs in the computer industry.

This distressing notion underpins the validity and need for more commercially trained computer professionals across the country.

In actuality, gaining new qualifications in IT as you progress through the coming years is likely the best career choice you could ever make.

By free traffic, we generally refer to the number of web visitors that access a certain web page without the website owner paying for them. Free traffic is the basic effect of good web page indexation, optimization and maintenance. If you have a high quality which targets a specific group of people, the popularity of your website will continue to grow every day, even more so if you have a unique product. How advantageous is free traffic? That is an entirely different question if we analyze the relevance of web surfers for a business.

You can get more traffic if you implement professional strategies to get the users’ attention and make the pages really competitive. And of course the more people you get to visit your website, the greater the chances are that you will make a sale. At least, this is what most people think when they are trying to boost the sales on there site. The truth is that you can get a thousand visitors every day and make no sales, on the contrary you could lose money if you are using Google Adwords. How is this possible? Such a situation takes us back to the choice of keywords. I’ll tell you why.

Let’s consider the case of a company that sells pet food. The keywords you choose for your website should be targeted for people looking to buy pet food not for people who are just surfing the web looking for information on the different types of pet food. Thus, instead of using short keywords, you should go for the so called long-tails that are more specialized. Carefully look into the keywords status in case you have high free traffic but a low conversion rate.

This is how many people get back to search engine optimization, and redefine their approach to the domain. Use keyword tracking tools to find the keywords that are most high in demand, and then select from the software-generated lists, the terms that you consider appropriate. Some of these will be used for article marketing, others for search engine optimization, but they all aim at increasing the level of free traffic and sales.

You could do a bit of reading about the rules that make free traffic advantageous for businesses. You will inevitably be able to find tips and techniques from marketing experts and more experienced marketers. Then you simply choose the top strategies and techniques that you believe will help your website and begin to implement them. Good luck!

In total, there are 4 A+ examinations and study sections, but your only requirement is to get certified in 2 to be thought of as qualified. Because of this, a great number of colleges restrict their course to just 2 areas. But allowing you to learn about all 4 options will give you a far greater perspective of your subject, which you’ll find vital in the working environment.

When you embark on the A+ training course you’ll be taught how to build, fix, repair and work in antistatic conditions. You’ll also cover fault finding and diagnostics, through both hands-on and remote access.

If you’re considering being someone who works for a larger company - in network support, build on A+ with Network+, or follow the Microsoft route - MCP’s, MCSA or MCSE in order to have a wider knowledge of how networks work.

A study programme should always lead to a nationally (or globally) recognised qualification at the finale - not a useless ‘in-house’ printed certificate to hang in your hallway.

To an employer, only the top companies such as Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco (for instance) will get you short-listed. Nothing else will cut the mustard.

If your advisor doesn’t dig around with lots of question - chances are they’re just a salesperson. If they push a particular product before understanding your background and experience, then you know it’s true.

Where you have a strong background, or maybe some live experience (maybe some existing accreditation?) then it could be that your starting level will be very different from a student that is completely new to the industry.

If you’re a student embarking on IT studies anew, it’s often a good idea to start out slowly, kicking off with user-skills and software training first. This can easily be incorporated into any study program.

For the most part, a normal student really has no clue in what direction to head in a computing career, let alone which market they should look at getting trained in.

What is our likelihood of grasping what is involved in a particular job when it’s an alien environment to us? Most likely we don’t know someone who does that actual job anyway.

Ultimately, the right resolution really only appears from a meticulous study across many changing factors:

* Personality factors as well as your interests - what work-oriented areas please or frustrate you.

* Do you hope to accomplish a specific aspiration - for instance, working from home in the near future?

* What salary and timescale requirements that are important to you?

* Learning what the main Information technology types and markets are - and what differentiates them.

* It makes sense to take in what is different for all the training areas.

The best way to avoid the confusing industry jargon, and uncover what’ll really work for you, have an informal chat with an experienced professional; a person who understands the commercial reality whilst covering each accreditation.

Including exams upfront and offering an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is common for a good many training companies. Consider the facts:

You’re paying for it by some means. One thing’s for sure - it isn’t free - they’ve just worked it into the package price.

People who take each progressive exam, paying as they go are much better placed to get through first time. They are conscious of what they’ve paid and revise more thoroughly to be ready for the task.

Take your exams somewhere local and look for the very best offer you can at the time.

Big margins are secured by a number of companies that get money for exam fees in advance. A number of students don’t take them for various reasons but the company keeps the money. Believe it or not, there are training companies who rely on that fact - as that’s how they make a lot of their profit.

You should fully understand that re-takes through organisations who offer an ‘Exam Guarantee’ inevitably are heavily regulated. They will insist that you take pre-tests first so you can prove to them you have a good chance of passing.

Spending hundreds or even thousands extra on an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is remiss - when consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will really guarantee success.

Should you be looking for training tracks certified by Microsoft, you will no doubt be hoping for training companies to supply a large selection of the most superior training courses available today.

by Jason Kendall

Should you be looking for training tracks certified by Microsoft, you will no doubt be hoping for training companies to supply a large selection of the most superior training courses available today.

Try to consider all the options with an advisor who is on familiar terms with the IT industry, and will help you select the most fruitful career to go with your personal characteristics.

Training courses should be designed to match your current skills and aptitude. Therefore, having got to grips with the most appropriate area of work for you, you’ll then need to look at what is the relevant route to see you into your career.

Usually, trainers will provide a bunch of books and manuals. Learning like this is dull and repetitive and not really conducive to remembering.

Long-term memory is enhanced when multiple senses are involved - this has been an accepted fact in expert circles for many years.

Locate a program where you’ll get a host of CD and DVD ROM’s - you’ll learn by watching video tutorials and demonstrations, and be able to fine-tune your skills in fully interactive practice sessions.

It’s very important to see examples of the study materials provided by each company you’re contemplating. They have to utilise video, demonstrations and various interactive elements.

Select CD or DVD ROM based materials where possible. You can then avoid all the difficulties of internet connection failure and issues with signal quality.

Many people question why qualifications from colleges and universities are being replaced by more commercially accredited qualifications?

Corporate based study (in industry terminology) is far more specialised and product-specific. Industry has realised that specialisation is what’s needed to service the demands of a technologically complex world. Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA are the key players in this arena.

In a nutshell, only that which is required is learned. It’s not quite as straightforward as that, but the most important function is always to cover the precise skills needed (along with a certain amount of crucial background) - without trying to cram in everything else - in the way that academic establishments often do.

In simple terms: Commercial IT certifications give employers exactly what they’re looking for - it says what you do in the title: i.e. I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Managing and Maintaining Windows Server 2003′. So companies can identify exactly what they need and which qualifications are required to fulfil that.

A fatal Faux-Pas that we encounter all too often is to focus entirely on getting a qualification, and not focus on the end result they want to achieve. Schools are brimming over with students that chose a program because it looked interesting - rather than what would get them the job they want.

It’s a terrible situation, but thousands of new students begin programs that seem fabulous from the syllabus guide, but which delivers a career that is of no interest at all. Try talking to typical university leavers for examples.

Spend some time thinking about earning potential and the level of your ambition. Sometimes, this affects what precise exams you’ll need to attain and what you can expect to give industry in return.

We’d recommend you take advice from an experienced professional before embarking on a learning course, so you’re sure from the outset that the specific package will give the skills for the job being sought.

A service provided by many trainers is a Job Placement Assistance program. This is to assist your search for your first position. With the massive demand for appropriately skilled people in Great Britain at the moment, it’s not too important to place too much emphasis on this feature however. It’s not as difficult as you may be led to believe to secure employment once you’re well trained and qualified.

However, avoid waiting until you have finished your training before getting your CV updated. As soon as you start a course, mark down what you’re doing and get promoting!

Having the possibility of an interview is more than not being known. A surprising amount of junior jobs are offered to people in the early stages of their course.

Normally you’ll get quicker service from an independent and specialised local recruitment consultancy than you’ll get from a training course provider’s centralised service, because they’ll know local industry and the area better.

A constant frustration for various course providers is how hard trainees are focused on studying to pass exams, but how little effort that student will then put into getting the position they’ve studied for. Don’t falter at the last fence.

Training in Cisco is intended for individuals who wish to work with routers and network switches. Routers are what connect networks of computers via the internet or dedicated lines. It’s advisable that you should first attempt your CCNA. Don’t be tempted to go straight for a CCNP as it’s a considerable step up - and you should gain some working knowledge before you take this on.

Jobs that use this type of qualification mean the chances are you’ll work for national or international companies that have several locations but need to keep in touch. Alternatively, you may find yourself working for an internet service provider. Either way, you’ll be in demand and can expect a high salary.

Achieving CCNA is all you need at this stage - don’t be pushed into attempting your CCNP yet. Once you’ve worked for a few years you will know if it’s relevant for you to have this next level up. If so, you’ll be much more capable to succeed at that stage - as your experience will help you greatly.

It’s important to understand: the actual training or a certification isn’t what this is about; the career that you want to end up in is. Far too many training organisations place too much importance on the qualification itself.

Never let yourself become one of those unfortunate people who choose a training program that seems ‘fun’ or ‘interesting’ - and end up with a plaque on the wall for a career they’ll never really get any satisfaction from.

You need to keep your eye on where you want to go, and create a learning-plan from that - avoid getting them back-to-front. Stay on target and begin studying for something that’ll reward you for many long and fruitful years.

Long before starting a study programme, it’s good advice to discuss individual career requirements with an experienced advisor, in order to be sure the study path covers all the necessary elements.

The somewhat scary thought of landing your first computer related job is often eased by some training providers because they offer a Job Placement Assistance programme. The honest truth is that it isn’t a complex operation to find the right work - assuming you’re well trained and qualified; employers in this country need your skills.

Having said that, it’s important to have advice and support about your CV and interviews though; additionally, we would recommend any student to update their CV as soon as they start a course - don’t put it off until you’ve qualified.

It’s possible that you won’t have even qualified when you land your first junior support role; yet this is not possible if interviewers don’t get sight of your CV.

Generally, an independent and specialised local employment service (who will, of course, be keen to place you to receive their commission) will be more pro-active than a division of a training company. Also of course they should be familiar with the area and local employers better.

A common grievance of a number of training course providers is how hard men and women are focused on studying to become certified, but how ill-prepared they are to market themselves for the job they’re qualified for. Don’t give up when the best is yet to come.

The way a programme is physically sent to you can often be overlooked. How many parts is the training broken down into? And in what sequence and what control do you have at what pace it arrives?

Often, you’ll enrol on a course requiring 1-3 years study and receive a module at a time. It seems to make sense on one level, but consider these issues:

What if there are reasons why you can’t finish all the sections or exams? What if you don’t find their order of learning is ideal for you? Due to no fault of yours, you may go a little slower and not receive all the modules you’ve paid for.

Put simply, the best solution is to have their ideal ‘order’ of training laid out, but to receive all the materials up-front. Everything is then in your possession should you not complete it at their required pace.

A so-called advisor who doesn’t ask many questions - chances are they’re really a salesperson. If someone pushes specific products before learning about your history and current experience level, then it’s very likely to be the case.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got any qualifications that are related, then you will often be able to begin at a different level to a trainee with no history to speak of.

If this is going to be your opening crack at studying for an IT examination then you may want to cut your teeth on some basic user skills first.

It’s really great that you’re reading this article! A fraction of the population say they enjoy their work, but most of us just bitch about it and do nothing. The fact that you’re here means we have a hunch that you’re at least considering retraining, which means you’re already ahead of the pack. Now you just need to research and follow-through.

Prior to considering any career courses, look for an advisor who can talk you through which area will be right for you. Someone who can get to know your personality, and find out the best career for you to work towards:

* Is working with other people your thing? Do you like to deal with the public? Maybe you like to deal with tasks that you can get on with on your own?

* Building and Banking are facing difficulties at the moment, so which sector will answer your needs?

* Is it important that this should be the last time you’ll need to re-qualify?

* Are you worried about the possibility of getting new work, and being in demand in the employment market right up to retirement?

Look at the IT sector, that’s our recommendation - it’s one of the few sectors of industry still growing in this country and overseas. In addition, salaries and benefits exceed most other industries.

One useful service that several companies offer is a Job Placement Assistance program. The service is put in place to steer you into your first IT role. The fact of the matter is it’s not as difficult as you may be led to believe to secure a job - as long as you’ve got the necessary skills and qualifications; the shortage of IT personnel in Britain looks after that.

Get your CV updated straight-away though - look to your training company for advice on how to do this. Don’t wait until you’ve qualified.

Quite frequently, you’ll secure your initial job whilst still on the course (even when you’ve just left first base). If your CV doesn’t say what you’re learning (and it hasn’t been posted on jobsites) then you won’t even be considered!

Actually, a specialist locally based employment service (who will get paid commission to place you) will perform better than any division of a training company. In addition, they will no doubt know the local area and commercial needs.

Certainly ensure you don’t put hundreds of hours of effort into your studies, only to stop and imagine someone else is miraculously going to find you a job. Stand up for yourself and get out there. Channel the same focus into finding your first job as it took to get qualified.

Being at the forefront of the cutting-edge of new technology is as thrilling as it comes. Your actions are instrumental in creating a future for us all.

We’re only just beginning to comprehend how this will truly impact our way of life. The way we interact with the world will be inordinately affected by computers and the web.

And don’t forget salaries moreover - the income on average in the UK for an average IT worker is a lot higher than in the rest of the economy. Odds are you’ll make a much better deal than you would in most other jobs.

Due to the technological sector emerging nationally and internationally, it’s likely that demand for appropriately qualified IT professionals will remain buoyant for years to come.

Students looking to build an IT career often don’t know what path is best, or even which market to get certified in.

Therefore, if you’ve got no experience in the IT sector, what chance is there for you to know what a particular IT employee does each day? Let alone arrive at which certification program provides the best chances for a successful result.

Ultimately, the right answer will only come from a careful study of many changing key points:

* The kind of individual you think yourself to be - the tasks that you get enjoyment from, and don’t forget - what makes you unhappy.

* What sort of time-frame do you want for your training?

* Your earning requirements that are important to you?

* When taking into account all that Information Technology encapsulates, it’s obvious you’ll need to be able to absorb what is different.

* What effort, commitment and time you’re prepared to spend on the training program.

The best way to avoid the barrage of jargon, and reveal the best path to success, have an informal chat with an experienced professional; a person who will cover the commercial realities and truth as well as each certification.

Make sure that all your certifications are what employers want - forget programs that lead to in-house certificates.

Unless your qualification is issued by a big-hitter like Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco or CompTIA, then chances are it will have been a waste of time - as no-one will have heard of it.

by Jason Kendall

Computer and network support workers are more and more sought after in the United Kingdom, as businesses are becoming more reliant upon their knowledge and skills. The world’s hunger for the above mentioned people is growing at an impressive rate, as everything becomes more and more computer dependent.

Many people question why qualifications from colleges and universities are being overtaken by more commercially accredited qualifications?

With fees and living expenses for university students spiralling out of control, and the industry’s growing opinion that key company training often has more relevance in the commercial field, there’s been a great increase in Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe certified training programmes that educate students for considerably less.

University courses, for example, often get bogged down in vast amounts of loosely associated study - and much too wide a syllabus. Students are then prevented from getting enough specific knowledge about the core essentials.

As long as an employer knows what work they need doing, then they just need to look for someone with a specific qualification. The syllabuses are set to exacting standards and can’t change from one establishment to the next (as academic syllabuses often do).

It can be a nerve-racking task, but landing your first job can be relieved by some companies, via a Job Placement Assistance service. Often, too much is made of this feature, as it is actually not that hard for a well trained and motivated person to secure work in IT - because there’s a great need for trained staff.

Advice and support about getting interviews and your CV should be offered (if not, see one of our sites for help). Ensure you work on your old CV today - don’t wait until you’ve finished your exams!

Quite frequently, you will get your first role while you’re still a student (sometimes when you’ve only just got going). If your CV doesn’t show your latest training profile (and it hasn’t been posted on jobsites) then you’re not even going to be known about!

If you’d like to keep travelling time and costs to a minimum, then you’ll probably find that a specialist independent regional recruitment consultant or service can generally work much better for you than a national service, because they’re far more likely to know the local job scene.

A good number of students, it seems, spend evenings and weekends on their training and studies (for years sometimes), and just give up when it comes to trying to get a job. Sell yourself… Do everything you can to get in front of employers. A job isn’t just going to bump into you.

All programs you’re considering really needs to work up to a nationally (or globally) recognised certification as an end-goal - not a useless ‘in-house’ diploma - fit only for filing away and forgetting.

If your certification doesn’t come from a big-hitter like Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco or CompTIA, then it’s likely it will be commercially useless - because it won’t give an employer any directly-useable skills.

Always expect the current Microsoft (or Cisco, CompTIA etc.) accredited exam simulation and preparation packages.

Avoid depending on non-official exam preparation systems. The terminology of their questions is often somewhat different - and often this creates real issues when the proper exam time arrives.

Obviously, it’s essential to ensure that you’re completely ready for your final certified exam before taking it. Revising ‘mock’ exams logs the information in your brain and helps to avoid failed exams.

by Jason Kendall

As you’re considering studying to get an MCSE, it’s probable that you fall into one of the following categories. You might be ready to enter the world of IT, and you’ve discovered that the industry has a huge demand for people with the right qualifications. Or you might be a knowledgeable person attempting to consolidate your skill-set with a qualification such as MCSE.

When looking into training companies, avoid any that cut costs by failing to up-grade to the latest Microsoft version. In the long-run, this will frustrate and cost the student a great deal more as they will have been educated in an old version of MCSE which inevitably will have to be up-dated almost immediately.

Providers should be completely focused on establishing the best direction for their clients. Mentoring education is equally concerned with helping people to work out which direction to go in, as much as giving them help to get there.

One area often overlooked by trainees weighing up a particular programme is ‘training segmentation’. Basically, this means the way the course is divided up for drop-shipping to you, which can make a dramatic difference to what you end up with.

Typically, you will purchase a course requiring 1-3 years study and receive one element at a time until graduation. While this may sound logical on one level, consider this:

What if there are reasons why you can’t finish all the sections or exams? What if you don’t find their order of learning is ideal for you? Because of nothing that’s your fault, you may not meet the required timescales and not receive all the modules you’ve paid for.

In all honesty, the perfect answer is to get an idea of what they recommend as an ideal study order, but get everything up-front. Meaning you’ve got it all if you don’t manage to finish as fast as they’d like.

Beware of putting too much emphasis, like so many people do, on the accreditation program. Training for training’s sake is generally pointless; this is about employment. You need to remain focused on where you want to go.

It’s an awful thing, but a great many students start out on programs that sound fabulous in the marketing materials, but which delivers a career that doesn’t satisfy. Try talking to typical college leavers for examples.

Never let your focus stray from where you want to get to, and create a learning-plan from that - not the other way round. Stay focused on the end-goal and begin studying for an end-result that will keep you happy for many years.

Chat with someone that knows about the sector you’re looking at, and who’ll explain to you a detailed run-down of the kind of things you’ll be doing on a daily basis. Establishing this before you start on any training path will prevent a lot of wasted time and effort.

Some training companies will only provide support to you inside of office hours (typically 9am-6pm) and sometimes a little earlier or later; most won’t answer after 8-9pm at the latest and frequently never at the weekends.

Email support is too slow, and telephone support is usually to a call-centre which will take the information and email an instructor - who will call back over the next day or so (assuming you’re there), when it’s convenient to them. This is all next to useless if you’re stuck and can’t continue and only have a specific time you can study.

The most successful trainers incorporate three or four individual support centres around the globe in several time-zones. By utilising an interactive interface to link them all seamlessly, any time of the day or night, help is just seconds away, without any contact issues or hassle.

Find a training company that offers this level of study support. Only true 24×7 round-the-clock live support provides the necessary backup.

Commercial certification is now, very visibly, beginning to replace the traditional routes into the IT sector - but why is this the case?

Industry is now aware that to learn the appropriate commercial skills, the right accreditation from the likes of Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe is far more effective and specialised - at a far reduced cost both money and time wise.

In essence, the learning just focuses on what’s actually required. Actually, it’s not quite as pared down as that, but principally the objective has to be to concentrate on the fundamentally important skill-sets (along with a certain amount of crucial background) - without trying to cram in all sorts of other things (as degree courses are known to do).

Just as the old advertisement said: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. All an employer has to do is know what they need doing, and then match up the appropriate exam numbers as a requirement. Then they’re assured that a potential employee can do exactly what’s required.

Thinking of taking an MCSE? Then it’s likely that you’ll fall into one of two camps: You are a knowledgeable person and you should formalise your skills with an MCSE. Alternatively you might be just about to enter commercial IT, and you’ve found there’s lots of demand for those with appropriate certifications.

As you find out about training colleges, steer clear of those who reduce their out-goings by not providing the latest Microsoft version. Overall, this will frustrate and cost the student a great deal more as they will have been studying an outdated MCSE program which will need updating almost immediately.

A company’s mission statement must be centred on the absolute best they can for their trainees, and they should care greatly about what they do. Working towards an MCSE isn’t simply about qualifications - the process should be all about helping you work out the best course of action for you.

Authorised exam simulation and preparation software is a must - and should definitely be offered by your training company.

Steer clear of depending on unofficial exam papers and questions. Their phraseology can be quite different - and this leads to huge confusion when the proper exam time arrives.

Always ask for exam preparation tools so you can verify your knowledge along the way. Simulated or practice exams prepare you properly - so the actual exam is much easier.

A fatal Faux-Pas that students everywhere can make is to concentrate on the course itself, instead of focusing on the desired end-result. Training academies are full of unaware students who chose a course based on what sounded good - instead of what would yield the career they desired.

It’s possible, for example, to obtain tremendous satisfaction from a year of studying but end up spending 10 or 20 years in something completely unrewarding, as a consequence of not performing some decent due-diligence when you should’ve - at the outset.

It’s well worth a long chat to see what expectations industry may have of you. Which precise exams you’ll be required to have and how you’ll go about getting some commercial experience. It’s definitely worth spending time thinking about how far you wish to go as it will force you to choose a particular set of accreditations.

Seek out help from an experienced industry advisor who understands the sector you wish to join, and who can give you ‘A typical day in the life of’ outline of what kinds of tasks you’ll be undertaking with each working day. It just makes sense to ensure you’re on the right track well before you commence your studies. After all, what is the reason in starting your training only to realise you’ve made a huge mistake.

Several companies offer a Job Placement Assistance program, to assist your search for your first position. In reality it’s not as difficult as you may be led to believe to land a job - once you’re trained and certified; because there’s still a great need for IT skills in the UK today.

You would ideally have help and assistance with preparing a CV and getting interviews though; additionally, we would recommend all students to bring their CV up to date as soon as training commences - don’t delay until you’ve qualified.

Having the possibility of an interview is far better than not even being known about. A decent number of junior jobs are offered to trainees who are still at an early stage in their studies.

The most efficient companies to help get you placed are most often specialised and independent recruitment consultants. Because they get paid commission to place you, they have more incentive to get on with it.

Do make sure you don’t invest a great deal of time on your training course, then call a halt and leave it up to everyone else to find you a job. Take responsibility for yourself and start looking for yourself. Channel as much energy and enthusiasm into landing a good job as it took to get qualified.

Quite often, students have issues with one aspect of their training which doesn’t even occur to them: How the training is broken down and sent out to you.

The majority of training companies will set up a 2 or 3 year study programme, and courier the materials in pieces as you complete each section or exam. This sounds reasonable until you consider the following:

How would they react if you didn’t complete each section at the proposed pace? Often the staged order doesn’t work as well as another different route may.

An ideal situation would be to have all your study materials sent to you right at the start; the complete package! This way, nothing can happen down the line which could affect your capacity to get everything done.
