May 2nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Intermezzo

The name is Matt Mullenweg, a guy borned in Houston, Texas on January, 11th 1984, that has an idea to build a blogging platform known as Wordpress. At the end of 2005, Matt established Automattic company which focus on Wordpress and Akismet development. He was a CNET employee before.

First Wordpress was built from a program called b2/cafelog in June 2002, then Matt finally has finished designing a blogging platform software that fill the standard in January 2003. He then contacted by Mike Little and together they develop the Wordpress based on coding b2/cafelog further.

In April 2004. together with Dougal Campbell, they released Ping-O-Matic, a mechanism for notification between blogs if any blog has updated its content. Ping-O-Matic serves 1 million notifications per day.

In May 2004, a competitor called Movable Type announced a changing of price structure on its blog service. This move by Movable Type makes a lot of bloggers shift their blog to Wordpress.

In February 2005. Matt released Wordpress 1.5 and the program has been downloaded 900,000 times. Finally, because of his busy activity maintaining Wordpress, Matt quit from his job as a CNET programmer, and started to buit Automattic

With his three friends Ryan Borem, Donncha O Caoimh and Andy Skelton, Matt began to build Automattic with a little money. The first success started in January 2006, Polaris Venturs, Radar Partners and CNET are willing to support financially and gave Automattic 1,1million dollar

March 2001, Matt Mullenweg ranked 16 of 50 on PC World’s Most Important Person In Web World, he was the youngest person on that list.

January 2008, Automattic gets extra funds from True Ventures in the amount of USD 29,5 million. What comes as no surprise, same as people before Matt who succeed in IT, Matt is a drop out college boy from University of Houston, majoring Politics and Philosphy.

Now, the questions is …. do we have to be a drop out student too to succeed in this business?? :)
